The Team
"Creative, collaborative and innovative thinkers making our world a better place."
In addition to core coursework, students have further school and community responsibilities.
Gardening
Students utilize the school greenhouse and garden beds to grow food for our school and community. Students budget, design and construct each bed. Students research the best seasonal foods to plant. Before harvesting, students research recipes that will highlight the produce. Students use the cooking team time to prepare food for our school. Additionally, the lettuce grown is donated to the cafeteria to use for school lunches. Students maintain the garden throughout the school year.
Nutrition
Our nutrition, wellness and compliance liaison instructs our students on the lifelong importance of nutrition. Working in small groups, students examine healthy diets around the world. Students closely examine foods within our region. Ultimately, each student will work on improving his or her own nutrition and overall health.
AEROPONICS - TOWER GARDENING
Aeroponics is gardening with recycled water and no soil. This means no weeding, herbicides or pesticides! Our team maintains three tower gardens. Each are located in our classroom. Students clean, plant, harvest and maintain the PH levels in all three. Lettuce and herbs are grown year-round in our towers.
Aquaponics
Aquaponics uses waste produced by fish to fertilize vegetation. Our newest endeavor is constructing and maintaining our aquaponic tank. We will soon have approximately thirty fish in our tank that will provide fertilizer for two raft beds. This also involves constant maintenance from our team and will provide plentiful crops. Our aquaponic tank is located in the school cafeteria.
cOOKING
Students select a healthy and delicious recipe to spotlight the vegetable or herb being harvested. A group of 4-5 students will work with a teacher to prepare the food. Cooking skills and food safety are taught during the process. The food is served to our team, cafeteria and community members.
Recycling
Our team is responsible for the school recycling program. All classrooms have a recycling bin. Renaissance students collect and properly dispose of all items each week. Students further their learning in the science classroom through lessons on how to reduce, reuse and recycle which includes an individual up-cycling project. Students also participate in an Earth Day field trip to Western Kentucky University which highlights the importance of environmental awareness.
Volunteering
Our students donate their time to help in our local soup kitchen. We are looking forward to continuing this during the 2017-2018 school year. Additionally, ten of our students volunteer at a local business each week through a cooperative program.
Carpentry
A team of interested students are designing and constructing a storage building. Using tools and measurements, students are creating the storage building for our team's gardening needs.
nEWSLETTER
Our educators and students recognize the importance of parent communication. A team of students create a bimonthly newsletter. Each newsletter includes a current overview of each course, classroom photos and important reminders.
